Engineering has a rich history and has been around since ancient times when early humans devised fundamental inventions including the lever, wedge, wheel, and pulley. All of these inventions are consistent with the modern definition of engineering, because they encompass basic mechanical principles to develop useful tools and objects. The term engineering itself has a much more recent etymology, and comes from the word engineer, which itself dates back to 1300, when an engine'er meant one who operates an engine. The word "engine" itself is of even older origin, deriving from the Latin ingenium, meaning "innate quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention.” Engineer started to become a word found more within the military. Later, when people started to design civilian structures such as bridges and buildings, the term civil engineering entered the lexicon as a way to distinguish between those who designed non-military projects and those involved in the older discipline of military engineering.
